Switzerland is of course renowned for fantastic cycling, especially if you like climbing.
Passes such as Nufenen, Furka, Grimsel and San Bernardino are legendary, and it’s no surprise that many great riders hail from Switzerland. 28 Swiss riders have won Tour de France stages, including Tony Rominger and Fabian Cancellara; and Alex Zülle won two Vueltas and came second in the Tour De France twice.
But the most popular Swiss rider of all would have to have been Hugo Koblet.
He won the Giro d' Italia in 1950, the Tour de France the following year, and won the Swiss track pursuit championship ever year from 1947 to 1954. All in all he won 70 races as a professional.
A handsome rider in both looks and style, Koblet quickly earned the nickname "pedaleur de charme". English cycling journalist Jock Wadley wrote that he was "the most charming of men to talk to", and Rene de Latour wrote in Sporting Cyclist: "Koblet had not an enemy at all.
His ready and kindly smile came from deep down inside, and one knows from the start that this was a man without rancour,a rare thing to say of anybody who has raced in top competition on the road where the intense physical struggle often leads to jealousy and dispute."
The latter parts of Koblet’s life were more difficult, with debts and a broken marriage, but we pay homage to him with our Swiss themed Koblet jersey.
