IL Pirata Merino Wool Cycling Jersey
The chemical-fuelled 1990s cycling scene was never short of controversy, and while some of the biggest names became the biggest criminals and others just faded away, Marco Pantani was a glorious light extinguished far too soon.
Pantani was one of the most exciting and charismatic Italian riders of modern history and the last cyclist to win both the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia in the same year, 1998. A classic climber, and capable time-trialist, he felt no fear in attacking at the base of climbs like Ventoux and Galibier, winning some epic battles with the likes of Armstrong, Ullrich and Virenque. His 1997 ascent of Alpe d`Huez in 36'40" minutes remains the fastest ascent today. His earring, dapper beard (dyed yellow when wearing the maillot jaune), headscarves and swashbuckling riding style saw him nicknamed ‘Il Pirata’ (the Pirate).
Although he never tested positive, Pantani was thrown out of the Giro d'Italia in 1999 due to a high haematocrit reading, and is now largely seen as a scapegoat in a sport suddenly keen to repair its image by sacrificing a high-profile scalp.
Pantani became broken and demoralised, spending his final days alone in an Italian hotel with a cocaine habit that eventually took his life on February 14 2004. Memorials to Pantani can still be found scattered throughout Italy.

By far my most favourite jersey. Out on the road 6.5 hours on Saturday racing and never felt too hot or cold. Just right. I wore this all through winter on early morning starts and was always warm. The fit is great too. Cheers for a great cycling product.
I am a designer by trade – so I folded the jersey inside out and took the chance to look at the stitch quality and quality of materials – fantastic – This is a well-made, high quality product – notice I normally wear Rapha and Assos – premium brands - this easily matches / surpasses them in quality. Price point for this quality is spot on and I am a happy owner. I will, in due course look into purchasing another and would highly recommend any potential customer to add at least one of your jerseys to their stable of cycling wear.
